Steampunk Cameo

This has been sitting in the back of my mind for ages.

This project was a bit of a nightmare. The company that makes the wings only makes them pointing in the one direction (stupid) so I couldn’t have them pointing out either side in an upwards ‘V’  shape, similar to the steampunk ring. Consequently, having them off to the same side threw out the weight of the necklace. So much frustration. So I decided to add the key and filagree to the bottom to help balance it out but it didn’t really work as well as I would have liked. Finally I needed to hide the copious amounts of glue at the back, so I used modelling clay and antique gold cloured paint.

The small clock-pieces were glued with E600 onto the hair to mimic her curls and waves, the others hung from the filagree with jump rings. The central hand was originally a dark blue-black so I sponged some gold alcohol ink onto it

The drop bead was made from modelling clay then painted with blue, teal, green, blue metallic, greenm metallic and gold paints in a mottled affect; the glass bauble filled with blue-green seed beads. The cog pieces were glued onto a watch fragment and backed with modelling clay and paint to prevent scratching. Lastly a blue green bead and some bronze beads finished it off.

All the best for the new year

Update- August

So what have I done in the last 6 months? Aside from work-study-sleep-work-study-sleep, very little! I finished off the chest of draws (unfortunately I don’t have any photos at the moment) but the quilt hasn’t progressed any further.

Aside from the occasional scribble on my uni notes…

April- Grandma’s 80th Birthday Card

I really love this card, It turned out exactly the way I wanted it to. Next I’m going to make a matching shadow box for it to sit in

IMG_5144 IMG_5147

Grey cardstock, Prima and Kaisercraft flowers, ScrapFX chipboard (I think)- white base and green mister spray, diamontes died with alcohol ink and (I’ll update the exact colours later). Inside is printed vellum

May- My Dreadfalls

Ohhh how I love these…

They took such a long time to make. I had to backcomb all the individual segment, then twist some together for the candycanes, then set them in boiling water (burnt fingers for days…) then set them onto combs. But oh so worth it!

sorting the colours...

sorting the colours…

sorting the piles to be set...

sorting the piles to be set…

I really have to make myself a blue and green set next, with a fake fringe as well

…Thanks to doctoredlocks for the supplies and tutorials on how to make them

July- Fashion design

While on placement I had a profound urge to draw

The first is a dress and jewellery design based on the element Air

The second is a ball gown based on a doorway in Lennox Street, Richmond that I absolutely love…

IMG_5174 20130702_150612

Not a great photo of the door but I used my camera phone as I was walking past.

Eventually I will colour these and scan them properly to put up but I’m holding out until I can afford a set of Tim Holtz’s Distress markers. Donations welcome!

August-Pink Tag

This is a tag for a friends birthday. I really like the way this turned out because I don’t normally do a big lot with pink…

IMG_5157 IMG_5158 IMG_5161IMG_5165 IMG_5166

Distress Ink- Victorian Velvet, Milled Lavender, Seedless Preserves, Shaded Lilac, Dusty Concord, Worn Lipstick, Tattered Rose; Clear Rock Candy Dry Glitter; Various swirl stamps; Sizzix/Tim Holtz Tattered Florals Die; various Swarovski crystal beads; resin and metal flowers; Cotton bias binding, Distress Crackle Paint- Clear Rock Candy

So while I havent done a big lot I’ve not exactly been idle…

Until next time…

Update: I completely forgot to credit these guys! An Absolutely AMAZING fashion design resource- because I can’t be bothered doing my own croquis…

…so much to do…

I’ve been so busy. Work- don’t get me started. Uni- starts at the end of the month; which means paperwork, police check, textbooks, parking permits, stationary, a decent pair of shoes. Ugh. All I can say is that it had better be worth it.

As far as crafting goes, I’m really disappointed with myself at the moment. I haven’t completed a single piece since the steampunk necklace. And I never got around to making the January tag for Tim Holtz’s 12 tags of 2013.  I’m hoping to get the february one done, but I don’t really care about Valentine’s day; It’s not really the big thing here that it seems to be in the States. So I’m thinking of turning it into more of an Alice in Wonderland type of thing, but I’m unsure how that will work.

But before you jump to the conclusion that I’m lazy, Let me say that I have been doing things, I have 3 projects lined up and 2 of which are very detailed, requiring a lot of work

IMG_4888 IMG_4892 IMG_4895

A set of KaiserCraft draws. This has taken so long due to the painting. I’m now up to the varnishing stage and I’m somewhat sick of the sight of it to be quite honest…

Steampunk necklace number 2. This one shouldn’t be taking me so long to complete, but as silly as it sounds, I’m waiting for some sort of inspiration to hit as to how I’m actually going to put it together. I have a rough design in my mind but I’m not happy with it, it’s to simple and I want something really striking. So it’s sitting on my desk waiting for my brain to work

This is where my attention has been lately. My grandmother turns 80 in April and my mother and I have decided to make her a quilt. On one side, It shall have photos (transferred to fabric) of her life, her parents and siblings, her marriage etc. done in a formal style. and on the other (which won’t be completed in time sadly) shall be an appliqué family tree of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. so far we have most of the pieces cut and half sown together in strips, we are up to chosing the photos, changing size and colour and printing them onto the fabric.

So, even though I haven’t completed anything in a while, I haven’t exactly been sitting idle

Until next time

Pocketwatch Necklace

This has been an idea in the back of my head for a while now. Soooo fiddly, the chain took forever as it is actually 3 chains twined around each other to form a rope and then left loose in the middle where the charms are. It was a nightmare. But I have to grudgingly admit that it was worth it.

The components are from all over the place- Tim Holtz Idea-ology, & Gypsies, Graphics 45, Plaid, as well as some I’ve had for so long I’ve forgotten where they come from.

The one cool thing I want to point out is that the piece inside the watch is actually glued onto a piece of Tim Holtz Idea-ology Kraft Glassine that had been wrinkled and inked over in Silver and Slate Alcohol Inks. Then it was the placed inside without glue. Now I can take it out and change it whenever I want! Thanks heaps to Tim for this idea, I probably wouldn’t have thought of it myself .

Despite the sweat, blood and tears that went into this piece, it feels good to have started off the new year creating. Happy new year!

Steampunk Ring

steampunk ring!

All components were attached to each other with wire or jump rings except for the tiny cogs which were glued down with E600

Not bad for my first steampunk piece

Tim Holtz 12 Tags of 2012- December

Well here we are folks; my entries for the Tim Holtz December tags competition.

The original tags can be found here.

This one was fun. I really love rainbows and I was inspired by some tinsel sold at Woolworths. I just gave it a haircut before I used it

All the techniques are the same except for the tag background and colouring in the baubles- I don’t have all the colours I would need in the Distress Stains so I used Distress Inks with the wrinkle free distress technique instead and the baubles were done by pressing the inkpads onto the craft mat and lifting off the colour with a water-brush to paint on the tag. Highlight were done in white acrylic paint and clear embossing powder for shine.

The Noel stamp is by Scrappy Cat; the Baubles by Stamp-It; The Musical Notes Tape by Francheville (I needed narrower tape than the Tim Holtz one); Distress Inks- Pine Needles, Spiced Marmalade, Worn Lipstick, Aged Mahogany, Faded Jeans, Chipped Sapphire, Dusty Concord; Distress Stickles- Pine Needles, Stormy Sky, Chipped Sapphire, Dusty Concord, Aged Mahogany and Antique Linen

This one is proof that I can do ‘traditional’ if I want to

Again, all the techniques were more or less the same.

Background- Aged Mahogany and Tarnished Brass Distress Stains; Poinsettia- Spellbinders Layered Poinsettia (Couldn’t get the Tim Holtz Tattered Poinsettia. Ever tried getting a poinsettia die 4 days before christmas? I don’t recommend it), Aged Mahogany, Fired Brick and Pine Needles Distress Inks, dark green cardstock, Clear Rock Candy and Pine Needles Distress Stickles, Gold Grape Head Headpins; Flourish- the letter ‘S’ from a chipboard piece stained with Pine Needles Distress Stain, Gold Star; Wording- stamp is unknown! It doesn’t have a brand or anything on it sadly, stamped in Pine Needles Distress ink, background cardstock with Pumice Stone and Walnut Stain Distress Inks

I hope people like these tags as much as I enjoyed making them, they were well worth the effort. In fact, I was out shopping today for the background cardstock and red ribbon for the poinsettia tag and had naturally taken it with me so I could match them properly when this lovely lady in the shop complemented it! It’s so nice when people do that, thank you heaps. I hope everyone had a lovely safe christmas and all the best for the new year
